An old man and woman lived poorly for many years. They had a small hut, and every day the man went out to fish.
One day, he threw out his net and pulled out only seaweed two times in succession. But, on the next throw, he pulled out a golden fish. The fish pleaded for its life and promised him that he could have any wish in return.
The old man became so scared by the fact that a fish could speak, that he said he did not want anything and let the fish go.
When he returned home and told his wife about the golden fish, she got very angry and told him to go and ask the fish for a new water trough because theirs was broken.
The fish happily granted this small request.
The next day, the wife told her husband to ask for a new house and the fish granted this also.
Then, the wife asked for a palace because she wanted to become a noble lady, and the fish granted this also.
Finally, she decided that she wanted to become the ruler of all the sea and that the golden fish would obey all of her commands.
The fish then cured her greed by putting her back in the old hut and giving her back the broken trough.
